Seating Calculator

How It Works

The calculator divides your total guest count by the seats available per table (accounting for a head table if selected). It then calculates floor area based on industry-standard spacing: each table needs its footprint plus room for chairs and walkways.

Table Size Reference

Space per table includes 3-4 feet of clearance on all sides for chairs and walkways. These are minimums — add more for comfort.

Seating Etiquette Tips

  • Mix groups intentionally: Seat people who would enjoy each other, not just by obligation.
  • Keep families together: But separate kids' table only if age-appropriate (8+).
  • Round tables encourage conversation: Everyone can see everyone. Best for weddings.
  • Rectangular tables feel more intimate: Great for long-table style receptions under 60 guests.
  • Head table vs sweetheart table: A sweetheart table (just the couple) saves space and reduces politics.

FAQ

How many square feet per person at a wedding?

For seated dinner with a dance floor, plan 12-15 sq ft per person. For cocktail-style with mostly standing,8-10 sq ft per person is sufficient.

Should I have a seating chart or open seating?

Assigned tables (with open seating within the table) work best for groups over 50. It prevents confusion, ensures everyone has a seat, and helps catering staff serve efficiently.

How far apart should tables be?

Leave 54-60 inches between table edges. This gives enough room for chairs and allows servers and guests to walk behind seated people comfortably.
